Twinbrook Happenings September & October 2017

Programs. We have a very exciting fall coming up for you, I'd like to highlight some special events coming soon:
We also have a regular stream of programs that include:

Here's a complete list of upcoming events for the next 30 days at Twinbrook.

Twinbrook: Back to Normal After Repairs.
Twinbrook:  Back to Normal After Repairs
Our Building. We'd like to thank you for your patience during this summer's repair and maintenance work.  We were closed briefly during the first week of September to repair a sewage line that had caused several problems during the early summer.  That issue has now been resolved by the Department of General Services, and the branch is back to normal.  We also received a repaving of the County section of the parking lot, and earlier in the year we got a replacement air conditioner and new lighting as part of the County's Energy Conservation program.  Many thanks to the Departmentof General Services for all its hard work on these issues!

Summer 2017.  We'd like to thank our partners Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), the Department of Environmental Protection, the Hooks and Needles, and the Friends of the Library Montgomery County (FOLMC) and its Twinbrook Chapter for helping to make our summer reading program very special.  We hosted a very fun "LEGO" derby, which MCPS Summer Rise interns helped us prepare. Our FOL Chapter provided funding for our race cars and ramps. We also held a wildly fun sharks program, and several other science programs during the summer.

Our admiration and gratitude goes to the Ruiz family, pictured here in July, showing off the dioramas and posters each child created in celebration of Summer Read and Learn program.

Library Advisory Committee.  Our Twinbrook Library Advisory Committee meets about six times per year.  Library advisory committees (LACs) are a part of the library board and advise the library system on library services at each branch.  We encourage customers to attend LAC meetings, provide feedback during, before, or after the meetings, and of course, to join the LAC. Our chairperson, Andrea, Secretary Ron, and members Shirley, Beatrice, and James also attend branch events and often set up a table the week before the LAC meetings to answer questions and gather feedback.

The next four meetings are:
  • Thursday, November 10 at 6:30 PM
  • Thursday, January 11 at 6:30 PM
  • Thursday, March 8 at 6:30 PM
  • Thursday, May 10 at 6:30 PM
At the November 10 meeting, we'll be focusing on the branch as a facility.

New Earbuds and Flash DrivesOther News.  In other news, customers will be pleased to learn that the system is now selling ear buds ($1) and flash drives ($3).  We continue to benefit from restored materials funding, we've been steadily taking in brand new travel books all summer long, and the stream of best sellers and new movies and TV shows is very healthy.  We hope you'll enjoy some soon.

We hope to see you again soon at the Twinbrook Branch.  If you haven't been since we re-opened, see our Twinbrook Flickr album to get a flavor for what's inside our branch.

Twinbrook Happenings Blog Post (March 2017)

Greetings Twinbrook Community!

We have a lot of interesting things going on at Twinbrook this spring and summer, and we hope to see you often at Twinbrook.

Andrea Hall, LAC Chair 2017

I’d like to introduce you to our new Library Advisory Committee (LAC) Chairperson, Andrea Hall. The Twinbrook Library Advisory Committee meets very other second Thursday, with the next meeting being on May 11 at 6:30 pm at the branch. Following LAC meetings are on July 13, September 14, and November 9. Look for our agenda and minutes on the Twinbrook Bulletin Board, and online. The public is welcome at all meetings of the LAC, and every meeting has time for the public to speak. We are also looking for additional LAC members—apply online to join the LAC.

We will be having a “meet and greet” the LAC and Branch Manager in collaboration room #1 (across from the service desk) on Saturday, March 25 from 12 pm to 1 pm. We would love to hear from you about what you like and what you feel could improve library services at Twinbrook. If you can’t make one of our meetings, drop us a line via the MCPL Webpage, or fill out a Comment and Suggestion form inside the branch. You can also call or ask for me when you’re in the branch.

We are also out in the community. Andrea and I will be at the Twinbrook Community Association Meeting on March 28 at the Twinbrook Community Recreation Center, and I will be at the Meadow Hall PTA meeting on April 14. If you think there is a community organization that would like a visit from MCPL, please let me know.

We have a number of exciting programs coming up this spring and summer. During Spring break, we are having a YOGA program just for kids on April 12 (please register online), and on April 13 a Cultures Open Mic from 4 pm to 6 pm. We’re looking for all ages and all talent levels to show us a bit of their culture (see web site for further details). Please call or email Eric Carzon to let us know your interest in performing. So far, we have a Vietnamese folk song and a Japanese folk song lined up. On April 20 we are having a Poetry Open Mic, come hear some local poets, and show us what you have while you are at it!

Coming this summer, we’re going to have the Twinbrook 500 Lego Car Derby on July 21, and Under the Sea: Sharks! (featuring an actual shark) on August 23. Kids look out for Science of Sports in July and a program where you can build your own renewable energy model, sponsored by the County Department of Environmental Protection. We’ll also have Mad Science on June 28 and 1, 2, 3, con Andres (a bilingual program in Spanish and English) on August 9 for our Summer Readers. Special thanks to Friends of the Library Montgomery County and its Twinbrook Chapter for funding several of these events.

with Persian Art Items
Our regular storytime programs are done every other Wednesday morning, one Saturday per month, and one Tuesday evening per month. We also currently have three English Conversation clubs running, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, we have a book club on the third Tuesday of the month, a weekly knitting and crochet club on Wednesday evenings, and a weekly Read to our Dog program for our young readers.

You can view our upcoming events on our website, call us at 240-777-0240, or grab a flyer at the branch to get the details on all these programs. We hope to see you soon.

I’d like to close with a picture of our March display case, which contains Persian art items. This month is the Persian New Year, Nowruz, on March 21. We change the case approximately once per month, so please talk with our staff if you have arts or crafts you would like to display in the case.
